How did light start to influence your work?

Since the beginning of my creative practice 16 years ago I looked into ways to transform the poetic experience of space. During experimentations across different media I have discovered that light is an immensely potent tool to create poetic transformations of environments. Since than I have been studying and practicing how to manipulate perception, emotion, memory, and imagination by calibrating properties of light in purpose of art.

Regarding my thesis, I’m working with light that’s intermediated by objects, creating different effects on the space that surrounds it. What kind of objects do you think may offer more interesting effects?

Optics is important study of how light interacts with different materials. By its nature, light is responsive to the environment and to the physical properties of it. Depending in what you are trying to achieve there are different materials that can help you achieve - reflection, refraction, diffraction, diffusion and so on.

What excites you the most about light and its possibilities?

The most exciting in regard to light is that it is ubiquitous, ephemeral, and mysterious.
It is ubiquitous - it is a source of life, it is everywhere and effecting everything.
It is ephemeral - ever-changing, dynamic, in constant transformation.
It is mysterious - it can’t be touched, but it can be felt..

“Transforming the poetic experience of space” - How can light play the predominant role on this matter?

I think that in the context of transforming the poetic experience of space light has immensely potent role. When light is combined with the understanding of human perception it can directly influence experience and even more if properly complimented with other media. As such it can lead to creation of original and experimental works of art.

How do you think we can mix light and space so they can be part of each other?

They are always intwined.  For me Juhani Pallasmaa said it best - “Sensory experiences become integrated through the body… Every touching experience of architecture is multi-sensory; qualities of space, matter and scale are measured equally by eye, ear, nose, skin, tongue, skeleton and muscle. “
The Eyes of the Skin, Juhani Pallasmaa, 2005

You are/ were instructor of Experimental Light Art. In what does that experimental work consists? Which aspects do you explore on that discipline?

My practical research is focused on both traditional and experimental principles of lighting design, spatial design, fabrication, audiovisual systems, and algorithmic composition. My interest is in exploiting technological advancements that can fuse perception of senses and add to the phenomenological experience of the artistic intentions. In order to do so, almost always, I need to experiment with different techniques and customize or invent the one that is the most appropriate for the specific work. This is a method that I also teach.

What do you think about color when it comes to experimenting the possibilities of light? Does color play an important role or is it a secondary effect?

Color determines the experience and meaning, therefore it is important to intentionally produced.

Do you think movement ads to light a different effect? What about the movement of objects in which light is projected?

Light, movement, and optics are fascinating creative tools. They can create very interesting effects. Many of them are known under the category as kinetic light art.

Do you think light creates new perspectives of space? How so?

Always. Different light in a same space can create sensation of that space being different too. Check James Turrell’s The Wolfsburg Project. He uses a ganzfeld technique - it is a technique from parapsychology that uses sensory deprivation to test for extrasensory perception, in other words this method radically reduces sensory inputs to maximize sensory experience. For this art piece, Turrell creates an empty space, a hollow construction that is ever so slowly flooded with changing colored light. When light changes, visitors have sensation that the space and architecture also changed shape.

For the ones who see the phenomenoms of light, do you think a mental space is developped in their minds?

Mental space is always created. It is what constitute the experience. When creating with light it is important to engage combination of body, mind, imagination and emotion.
